Well for the people who just say be proud to be an american, are doing the "so american" by not answer the question. It is like black people getting mad being called the N word. When "so american" is considered to be bad is when it is about people just ignoring the issues and saying something else. Also not caring what other people want and just doing what he or she thinks is correct. In addition to just blaming everything on everyone else. Being, "so american" is also into things which are easy and flashy. The being "so american" is refering to how alot of the rest of the world might see us, they see the stars like Pairs Hilton and all those scandals with other americans which make the news. I am proud to be an american, but those might help answer the question and help you write the paper.

Some Americans go to other countries and they isolate then selves and don't try to learn the local customs but most do a good job of representing the USA. I found that most of the people that I met liked to tell me all the things that was wrong with the US but then turn around and tell me how they would like to come here to live. Proud to be an American

Okay so no one has answered your question on the negativities about America. Capitalism and the american government makes the rich richer and the poor poorer. Universial health care is far supieror than HMOs. If you do not see that every citizen should be taken care of as a right than you are an idiot buying into what conservatives tell you. Capitalism is great in some cases, but no fortune made was not done so without doing something illegal, immoral or exploited another group of people. Americans have this preconcieved notion that we are the best country in the world. We aren't. We are great but I would not say the best. Other countries hate us for our ignorance. Honestly we bomb this **** out of countries, we have a huge ego and we try to be the world police. Any person who says they are just jealous, is just feeding the flames of their distaste for us.

the ugly american http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Ugly_American In the novel, a Burmese journalist says "For some reason, the people I meet in my country are not the same as the ones I knew in the United States. A mysterious change seems to come over Americans when they go to a foreign land. They isolate themselves socially. They live pretentiously. They're loud and ostentatious."
Eugene Burdick and William Lederer.wrote the book in '58; that attitude has come home to rest and is prevalent among many here in the usa.
btw, although 50 years old the book and it's associated novel Sarkhan are as relevant today as then. explains alot about how american international relations work. especially Sarkhan. check out the review at http://www.amazon.com/Sarkhan-William-J-Lederer/dp/B0006BNB22

Socialism - Good on Paper, Not in Reality... An economics professor at Texas Tech said he had failed very few students but had, once, failed an entire class. That class had insisted that socialism worked and that no one would be poor and no one would be rich, a great equalizer. The professor then said, "Ok, we will have an experiment in this class on socialism." "All grades will be averaged and everyone would receive the same grade meaning, obviously, no one will receive an A." They all agreed to this. After the first test the grades were averaged and everyone got a C. The students who studied hard were upset and the students who studied little were happy. But, as the second test rolled around, the students who studied little had studied even less and the ones who studied hard decided they wanted a free ride too, so they studied little. The second test average was a D! No one was happy. When the 3rd test rolled around the average was an F. The scores never increased as bickering, blame and name calling all resulted in hard feelings and no one would study for the benefit of anyone else. To their great dismay the professor failed them all. Then he sent all of them this note: "A socialistic government will also ultimately fail - because when the reward is great, the effort to succeed is great, but when government takes all the reward away, no one will try or want to succeed."

There is nothing wrong with being American. I am an American. I am proud of it. I don't know how Americans are supposed to act. I just do my own thing and don't worry about what others think.

be proud for who you r and if you are " so American " as people like to say don't care about it is like me I'm from a Latino or Hispanic race and if you say "you r so Mexican" OR any other race at first i probably jump up but this is what i am and I'm proud yes I'm " so Mexican" because this is how i grow up and i don't care if people like it or not
so don't worry and be a example of life
and remember some times people thinks and believe that all the things that happen on TV are and represent in general the real life of our culture so in r hands is the power of change that toughs

There is nothing wrong with being an American! Be proud, don't let anyone tell you otherwise, or try to make you feel guilty.
Those who attack you for being American, obviously don't understand the benefits of living in a FREE society, or have bought into the "hate America, and blame America first crowd"
I say God bless America! If you don't like it the LEAVE!

There is nothing wrong with being American.
It simply says to me that some people need to get out and see the rest of the world.
It is not surprising that some pompous professor would suggest such a thing.
Tell him/her to take your essay paper, roll it in to a tight cylinder, and then thrust it horizontally up their vertical shaft.
