I was terminated from my job 2 weeks ago. I saw it coming, I knew it wasn't working out and when my employer sat down with me they said it wasn't personal, that they liked me but they felt like the work wasn't a good fit. Now I'm having a hard time getting hired anywhere and I'm worried that they may have told me one thing and are telling potential employers something different. Should I tell potential employers not to contact them? Should I call them and find out what they're telling potential employers so we're on the same page? How can I recover from this incident?

First congrats for not blaming your employer. Most people put it all on them and don't reflect on the problems as their own. Thats good for you.

Worry little about what your employer is saying to others because its out of your control really. I mean if they were saying some nasty stuff it might be something you could get them to stop doing but most employers don't want the risk of that and won't say anything other then you worked there.

Get back to work fast even it means a lessor job. Remember even from a lessor job you still have income which removes some of the problems and you can be looking for the better move up later.

how long did you work there? if it wasn't very long do not use it on your resume. I believe that when a potential employer contacts a reference that that job can only say how long you worked there for... i may be wrong but i was informed this once a couple years ago. Two weeks is not very long to go without a job and f.y.i. if they fired you you can file for unemployment which will come in handy while you are looking for another job. Be patient and give it time... you will find something

This is a very dishonest thing to do, BUT.. you can call from a number your ex-employer doesn't know about. Give a false name and tell them you are calling about ( give your name) for a job reference. If they are cooperative, ask questions like, was he dependable, was he a good worker, did he miss work, was he on time, why did you seperate him from your company? And then NO MATTER WHAT, be polite and thank them for their time and in assisting you. This is the only way you can find out. GOOD LUCK!

Ex-employers do not say bad things about ex-employees. If the do, the ex-employers will end up getting sued. The only thing ex-employers will say is that you worked for them and the dates you worked for them.
If you are having difficulty getting a job, it may be some other factor, such as type of work or salary you are looking for.
