becuase the rest of the rules is:
i before e except after c except for long E and sounds like an a like in neighbor and weigh.

Good point. Actually the whole rule is i before e except after c, or sounding like a as in neighbor or weigh. Protein is one more exception. Only 80 % of English is regular (follows the rules). I'm sure glad it's my native language. I do love it though. I guess it's contagious as my daughter is now teaching high school English. We make it a game to try to catch each other's grammar mistakes.

The CORRECT ENGLISH/GRAMMAR RULE is as follows:

Use ''i'' before ''e'' except after ''c'' , or when followed by ''g'' as in ''neighbor'' and ''eight''

A word like ''protein'' would be one of those words that are the exceptions, as there ofen are in the English language.

The rule is 'i before e, except after c' - but only for the long 'ee' sound. e.g. believe, chief, receive, conceit.
Exceptions are: seize, weird, counterfeit, caffeine, protein.
