The truth is that right now lower end computers simply just plain suck, suck, suck. And upgrading is virtualy usless, and a waste of time right now on most occasions So i would go new unless you have all the parts from several other computers and don't have to spend a dime. Please do not get Pentium D or core duo, they have allot of memory and motherboard issues unless u spend around 200 dollars more and upgrade the ram, but buy then you will be spending more closer to the core 2 duo. If you are on a tight budget i would go with a AMD Atholon 64x2 processor. Its slower than core 2, but better than Pentium d and core duo, and cheaper than core 2. So I would go with the Amd Athlon with hp or the likes of them. If you look around you may even get a good deal or rebate and the price could be at the cost of a Pentium d or core duo. Don't settle for the first computer you see and shop around and compare prices. Another option if you have good credit would to go on a 90 day same as cash or credit with 6 months-18months zero interest and try to pay it off. If you run out of time transfer the balance to another credit card with zero apr for balance transfers to get away with interest. This way you can pay in payments and maybe afford a higher end product, and the payments are real low, and instead of forking over 4-9 hundred dollars in one month you can make small easy payment that are simple for your budget. Building one may cost u more and u are probably going to use lower end components, so that does not work either. Good luck and God bless.

You might check pawn shops for some good buys on home-built or name brand computers. Usually you get them without the software. I would recommend looking for one that has Windows 2000 or Windows XP already installed and running.

If you have a friend who is pretty computer savvy have that person check it out.

You could keep your old computer or gut it for usable parts. Lots of times the hard drives, CD-ROM, floppy drives, memory sticks and such can be used to help upgrade newer computers. Or take it to the pawnshop and see what you can get for it.

Just saw your specs on your old computer. It should be serviceable for quite a while. You could add memory (SDRAM) if you do games, or put another hard drive in if you need more storage capacity. My computer is also 6 years old with a slower processor than yours and I have no plans to retire or replace it. I might break down and get a better laptop at some point, though.

Have you thought of just upgrading the 6 yr old with a new MB and processor? You can then use your old bits and save a bundle.

Try Price Watch

You can donate it to charity, but make sure you wipe the HD first.
