Pin of stand rests in the underside of the tripple tree of your bike (look at the hole on your bike).
The stand holds the front wheel off the ground and the bike is very steady - I've used them.
Then just use an ordinary floor jack to get the rear wheel off the ground.

I made mine out of a 4" X 6" X 48" fir piece of wood. Drilled one end for a 48" piece of 3/4" galvanized pipe. Slip under frame and push to turn wood 1/4 turn. Easier to use than stand and oil cann be drained without spillage. Found design on Internet in Sportster Section.

I also made mine (I made one to lift forks and one to lift swingarm). I used 2 x 4s with lawnmower wheels on the bottom. Works great.

Get a bike lift. You can get one at sears for around 100 bucks. Well worth it.
