I attended a work-related seminar put on by mental health workers. They had the participants put on headphones attached to a small cassette player and listen to the recording. It consisted of examples of the "voices" that mentally ill people often hear (they wanted us to hear what they hear). The voices said nothing but negative things - "You suck! You're a loser! Everybody hates you! You'll never amount to anything!" etc., repeated over and over. It was quite the experience. My question is : do those patients ever hear good stuff? Do the voices ever give them positive affirmations like "Hey...you're a great person! Hang in there!" "Hope ya have a great day!" etc.,?
Are the voices always so negative? Why wouldn't these imaginary voices tell 'em positive stuff?

NO. We never hear good voices, we only hear evil ones that come and go at their leisure. We are the victims of that unholy father of lies. We can only do so much against them, and then go to hell with them or get help to fight them off.
Most of us use two weapons against these voices. God and the help of men and women in the here and now. Doctors, friends, families.
Nothing kind in those voices, and when they are kind they are deceitful to the point of self destruction.
I haven't heard them for more than a decade and a half, and when I did hear them they were short, and loud calls that I had no warnings of. It took the doctor a lot of work to help me. Because they were starting to get more longer, and a lot more common.
I'm in God's hands now, I'm safe from them.

That is a very good point. I have worked with people that hear voices and the majority hear only bad things. There are some people that hear voices that tell them what to do, but they aren't negative. Then others wonder is this their conscience?

If you hear voices and they are affirmative, wouldn't you still have mental problems? People who think they are super heroes might hear a voice that says, "You can fly." That is an example of a good and bad self - talk.

C. :)!!

Interesting question you post here. If they have a disorder that tells them good things and do good things, is it a good idea to help the patient?

Yes. However, we don't call people that hear the 'good' voices insane. We call them Fundamentalist Christians.
