it depends who is doing the assessment. IRA were freedom fighters to their supporters, terrorists to the UK Gov, and insurgents to the Irish. Inthe current world climate the question is 'are muslims freedom fighters, terrorists or insurgents?'
According to CNN, Bush and Bair, they are pretty much all terrorists. According to Aljazeera, freedom fighters. Which channel do you watch and which channel dictates your thinking? It's a rich world and thanks to the internet people are starting to ask difficult questions which Bush and Blair can no longer justify. Are the american forces in Iraq, terrorists, freedom fighters or insurgents. If they are freedom fighters whos freedom are they fighting for whenthey have killed over 200,000 of the local civilian population? If they are terrorists why does the the UK and the world condone them? If they are insurgents why dont they speak Arabic and have any ties to the region apart from oil and money? To middle easterns, they are without doubt just terrorists - the new world empire, intent on world domination.

Or a U.S. military person? Depending on whose eyes you are viewing the situation through, everyone is a terrorist, yet no one views themselves as terrorists, they each are only doing what they think is right. Terrorists were the Germans in Europe during the second world war. Freedom fighters were those civilians who fought the Germans. Insurgents are the civilians who sided with the Germans.
