Well, a Freedom Fighter is fighting for Freedom from Oppression.

A Terrorist is someone who uses terror, to scare a population, most often a civilian population into affecting change that they would not normally support.

An insurgent is a civilian who is fighting to destabilize a government or system of rule in an area.

You can have Insurgents who are Freedom Fighters.

It really depends which end of the gun you're looking at!

Strictly speaking, a 'terrorist' is someone who tries to achieve something through acts of destruction, be it bombs, hijacking, shootings or the such, usually against an Legally Recognised Authority (eg the IRA vs the UK Government);
A 'Freedom Fighter' is the same as a Terrorist BUT they're doing the same things against an Invading or Occupying Body (eg the French Resistance vs the Nazis);
an 'Insurgent' is someone who comes from another Country to fight against an Authority, be they either of the previous types (eg Al-Quida vs the US/UK in Iraq).

As you can see, there's quite a range of overlap here - a lot of IRA 'Terrorists' were Irish Nationals (making them 'Insurgents') while quite a few of the 'Insurgents' in Iraq are Iraquis (making them technically 'Terrorists'!)

Note in all this I have not taken sides in any of this, because at the end of day it's all a bit stupid really - why can't people just ..... talk?

i would define a terrorist as a person who uses indiscriminate terror tactics i.e. deliberate targeting of civilians to cause the maximum loss of life and the ensuing panic as a military/political tactic. george bush and tony Blair for example
A freedom fighter need not necessarily use violence . Ghandi could be described as a freedom fighter ditto Nelson Madela (although Mandela supported violence in some circumstances ). Insurgency has become one of those all embracing terms that could describe all those opposed to the occupation of iraq or indeed any other country that is suffering military annexation

I'd try to apply these words differently than the press because they are so loaded. "Liberal" has also become a loaded word by repeated offensive contexts.

Words are used as weapons in a propaganda war. Words have denotations and connotations (Good or Bad). The US government has colluded with the media tends to choose words that support their position, and then repeated those words relentlessly in the press, TV, and radio.

In fact, these are all human being who is being miscategorized through propaganda label. Here are ALTERNATIVE defintions that will never be sanctioned by the major networks:

According to some alternate definitions, CIA operatives should be called terrorists. (Different meaning than FOX)

Freedom fighters should be applied to those who are trying to liberate their country from an occupying military force. (Different meaning than that used by FOX.)

An Insurgent sounds like it should be applied to people who are attacking the soverignty of a country not defending it. (Different meaning that FOX uses.)

A freedom fighter is fighting against an occupation. A terrorists kills indiscriminately to gain attention for their cause. An insurgent is a magic phrase use by the Bush admin to fool people into supporting his lie-based war.

A freedom Fighter is someone who "fights for freedom" such as Gandhi and Martin Luther King - they used words not weapons to achieve their aims.

A terrorist is someone who, unable to use words, resorts to slaughtering civillians in order to achieve their goals, in the idea that this will somehow force the government to listen to them. The civillians they slaughter don't seem to matter to them.

An insurgent is a civillian who arms themselves to fight against soliders.

A terrorist would be one who seeks to bring death and fear to a group of people for whatever reasons they have.
A freedom fighter would be one who engages in an armed rebellion against a corrupt or oppressive government.
An insurgent would be one who fights against the current government or ruling party.

Good question.

In this case:

Insurgents are people from other countries that hope to help the people of their faith.

Freedom fighters are Iraqis who don't want a permanent U.S. presence in the Middle East.

Terrorists are cowards who are moved to radical means to send a radical message.
