I currently live in Southern California and love it, but cost of living is getting way to high. I heard Denver is one of the most beautiful, fun, and nicest places to live. Can anyone please help me in finding the specific neighborhoods/areas that are good for a 26 year old, single, asian male professional to still have fun, but with a lower cost of living? THanks! I'm also considering Atlanta, GA as an option so if you know about both cities what is your preference on which one you would pick?

I'm in my mid 20s, single, male and live in Denver for work after living in Chicago and San Fran. IMO, Denver is a great city if you like the outdoors but nothing special if you don't. The cost of living in Denver is much cheaper than San Fran and I'm sure it would be cheaper than where you are in CA.

Overall, I would suggest living in the actual city of Denver for a young single person because the suburbs are more geared towards families. The best DENVER neighborhoods for single people are:
Lodo: AKA Lower Downtown, where most of the major bars and clubs are. Full of single women, but can be expensive.
Highland: Just west of downtown, good mellow bars and restaurants, cheaper than Lodo.
Cherry Creek: Very upscale neighborhood with nice bars and restaurants, expensive, and a bit too quiet at times.
Capital Hill: A cheaper version of Lodo that is urban but not full of yuppies.

If you want to move here, visit the above mentioned neighborhoods and I'm sure you will like at least one of them.

Finally, there is no water shortage here. Do a google search for "Denver water shortage" yourself. You should also be forewarned: there are a lot of narrow minded, consevative, white people who live in the suburbs and don't want any more transplants so they may make up crazy BS stories and bumper stickers to try and scare us off. Don't sweat it, they're just scared of change.

I'd probably pick Denver over Atlanta. I've spent many months in both cities on business. I also live in SoCal.

The cost of living in Denver isn't really any better than SCAL, especially if you want to live close to work and and nightlife. If you are inclined towards outdoor sports, you could live further from the employment centers (Downtown and Tech Center), but the commute can be pretty bad. LoDo (an older warehouse area near the sports stadiums that has been converted to Lofts) is the place to live for single professionals.

Atlanta's traffic is pretty bad, but living in Buckhead (north of downtown about 5 miles) which is mainly condos and apartments has lots of dining and entertainment. Condo prices are really high though ($500k +). There is light rail (MARTA) to downtown.

Mass transportation is better in Atlanta than Denver.

Atlanta has tornadoes and is affected by hurricanes. They also have snow and ice, but it is rare.

Denver has snow (usually never more than 6" and it melts away quickly). Denver also has severe thunderstorms an hail in the summer, so covered parking is a plus.

Fiding work in both cities isn't too bad.

I live in Boulder, CO and it is the best city in the world! Cost of living is fairly high but most likely not more than what you are used to. Nearby cities like Louisville, Broomfield, and Superior are much lower but still close to the city (denver) and the mountains! I will always be a boulder girl myself though...It is beautiful and amazing here! Good luck! Also, my cousin just mover to a suburb around atlanta last week. So far she loves it and the cost of living is reasonable.

If you don't mind humidity, then Atlanta.

If you like 250-300 days of sunshine and little humidity, then Denver. Our winters are not that cold and I moved here from Santa Monica 4 years ago and was able to buy a 2bd 2bath condo for less than $175,000 in a southern suburb (I am much older than you, so I think you should be closer to LoDo since you are young).

I would never choose to move back to So Cal -- I lived there for 20 years. The weather, people, traffic, cost of living, everything is much nicer in Colorado.

This is my opinion and I hope you make the best decision for you!

Good luck!

I live in Littleton, CO...which is a suburb of Denver, south west of the city...it takes about 20 minutes to get into LoDo (lower downtown, the IT place in Denver) by car or 10 minutes by the 'literail.' I would stick to south and west (there is Golden, Littleton, southern Lakewood, Highlands Ranch (more families, but very very nice)). When you look at north and east of Denver you are looking at high crime areas. I wouldn't say that there are any really BAD looking areas, but places like Aurora are horrible for crime, but it LOOKS really nice...so beware of that.

One concerning thing about the Denver area is that housing prices are kind of high for the income levels...it is such a beautiful area that they know they can charge high and get that price...I am not saying it is too expensive, just more expensive than people might realize.

It would help to tell us where you'll be going to school so we could narrow the living area down. Metro Denver covers a large area.

Denver? Are you CRAZY!! They get so much cold weather! You'd not survive up there. Atlanta is a much better place to pick. Its a much nicer climate and has much better job opportunities than stagnant, water shortage ridden Denver.
