Jim Thorpe, PA was originally Mauch Chunck. Jim Thorpe's widow was looking for a way to honor his memory. Mauch Chunck agreed to change the name of their town if he was to buried there.
Intercourse, PA was named for a race course at the intersection of the town's 2 main roads.
The nearby town of Paradise was named by the Amish who came to this country looking for religious freedom. The two nearby towns led to the expression, "You have to go through Intercourse to get to Paradise".

Woods Cross, Utah. A small town just north of SLC. The town was named for Daniel Woods. Back in the early days, Brigham Young wanted to build a railroad through the area and Mr. Woods would not have it .... he was the major land owner. Mr. Woods, being a devout Mormon was called by Brigham Young to go on a mission to spread the gospel of the church. Mr. Woods could not refuse, and while Mr. Woods was away on his mission, Young took over the land and built the railway. When Woods returned from his mission he was furious! Woods was very cross! Anyway, that is how the story goes of how my town got it's name. Woods was cross at Young for taking his land while away on his mission. Woods Cross!
By the way .... I graduated from Woods Cross High School!

Big Bone Lick in KY.
I think it's a state park instead of a city, but I thought it was funny.
