Since a hypothesis is based on unproven ideas but rooted in established scientific ideas it could be called an educated guess. I believe a hypothesis is what comes before a theory. A theory is a hypothesis that is a lot more researched or more thought out. Because a hypothesis usually has a basis in other established theories it can be described as an educated guess.

The reason that a hypothesis is called an educated guess is because you use the knowledge that you already have to make guess about how something will turn out. So, you use the education that you already have to guess what will happen.
