I have a daughter named Miranda. She is nine years old, and we have yet to run into another little girl named Miranda. I do recall one Miranda I knew myself during childhood, and several women named Miranda (one friend, one business associate, and one acquaintance). I like that it is a beautiful name, but is not very common. We call our daughter Mandy as a nickname, but other nicknames could be Randi, Mira (like Myra), or Andi.
We are currently expecting another daughter, and her name is going to be Gwendalyn. It, too, is beautiful and not unheard of, but not too common either. I affectionately call her Gwendy but Gwen and Wendy are the common nicknames. Gwendalyn is a form of Guinevere, which the name Jennifer is also derived from.
Other names on our list for future daughters include:
Candace (with Cindy as a possible nickname, but NOT Candy)
Kathryn (I love the name Katie)
Malinda (Mindy?)
Darlene (Darla could be a nickname, and Darlene means "little darling")
Check out the SSA website at http://www.SSA.gov They have a list of the most popular baby names each year, going back several decades. Looking at recent years can give you ideas of what to NOT name your child if you are looking for something unique, or you can go back several decades and find some names that are classic but not overused today.
Have fun picking out a name!
