I once had a car pull up in front of me, and I ran about fifty yards to get to it. The boot lid chunked open as I approached and I gladly threw my hefty rucksack into the back.
Only to watch the bas*ard drive off with every single thing I needed to live for a week or two...money, knickers, jeans, cash cards, tee shirts, watch and jewellery, everything! I was cold, wet, tired and hungry and a damned LONG way from home...and there is just about nothing worse.
Never traced the number either. You try getting back from Penzance with two pee in your pocket!
I had to hitch all the way back, but some drivers were lovely...on the last leg of my journey home, one driver insisted on going around six miles out of his way to drop me at my gate. Thanks...whoever you were and a big 'skull-dragging if I ever catch hold of you' to the other one!

I hitch hiked accross Canada and back, jsut to waste a couple of months in the summer of 91. It was an awsome experience, met some really good people. Did alot of walking too. I found I always got picked up quicker if I was humpin along down the highway as opposed to sitting and waiting. My most memorable was being picked up by a capt in the Canadian army, she was VERY memorable, I will never forget her. Partied it up with some Hells Angels in Montreal. It was a good summer.

I used to hitch hike a lot when I was younger and I still tend to pick up hitch hikers when possible. The most memorable ones must be when I was just s'posed to get a ride to the next town but ended up spending the weekend on a rock festival on a spur of the moment. =)

I used to hitch hike all the time, everywhere I went. The most memorable person I met was a preacher when I was traveling from Mass. to Fla. I was broke, tired and starving. He picked me up, fed me, gave me an extra coat he had and hooked me up with a few bucks. It was the safest I felt the entire trip.

It's waaaaay too dangerous. Especially for girls. When my Mum was 16, she and her friend hitch-hiked round France without her parents knowing. They didn't even speak the language.
I think they were lucky to survive.

In this day and age, I would never take the chance! Seems you're a young woman- please take care and don't do this. There are crazy people who are looking for young girls alone. back when I was young- in the 60's and 70's- young people hitch hiked all the time and it was relatively safe. But no more! Take heed, please!
