I know they are for artists to record and release albums, and the record company gets the artists' money or at least part of it, but what are they really for? I know one artist who released a single without a record label. So why do artists need a record label? do record labels help you keep track of things or do they make your music copyright? can somebody please tell me, im really confused about it.

It has mostly to do with distribution and advertising. The record labels are the main channels for CD sales and radio play.

Mainly, they're for distribution of the music - the larger the company (i.e. Sony or Atlantic records) the wider an audience your material can reach.

They do have a "stable" of staff that helps in other ways - PR people, legal reps, accountants, etc. They often have the "connections" - for lack of a better term - to get your material copyrighted, make sure you get paid for it, etc.

they can set you up with producers, promote your album (they already know how to do it, maybe) and have contacts, to get you played or gigs at events. Also handle distribution and sales, take orders and ship out boxes from the factory, that's part of promoting and gettingthem to order boxes in the first place. Image branding and production teams even. it can all be a big production.
