If you use the friendship bracelet knot, just use 6 strands doubled to start:

But it might get rather wide because hemp is much bigger than embroidery floss.
If it gets too big or lumpy when you start the normal way, you can start with less strands and add more strands later, you will have to experiment a little, but mostly you can use a new string instead of the one on the outside when you want to add strands.
Pin the work down on a heavy cushion or a macrame board if you can not handle it freehand.

If you want to start with 12 single strands, knot them together with a thumb knot and braid a bit, (3 times 4 strands,) before the first knots in the bracelet.
