Well yes it is. Check’s are legally binding documents,, and as the spouse has passed away they cannot be legally liable. Actually thou the check issue is the tip of the iceberg,, it’s obvious you have not adjusted to your spouse dying yet. I hazard a guess Richard K might actually your husband’s name?
There are several stages involved in mourning death of a spouse or any loved one, each of the stages are something you will have to travel through. It is a journey you will have to take! After which,, having the spouse’s name on the check will not be an issue to you any longer.
Google “death of spouse”,, etc,, or “death and coping” read and learn. Work through the issues as they arise. A fact of life is there is death, it may come at anytime to anyone, the test is being able to recognize and except it,, then MOVE FORWARD WITH YOUR LIFE. You are NOT the first or only person to lose a spouse or loved one. The only difference is this has directly happened to and affected you. Your Spouse has passed away,, BUT (As strongly as Can be stated) She (or he) does want you to continue on with your LIFE !! I don’t mean forgotten,, as a part of that person will always be in your heart, but accept that they are apart from you,, and move forward with your life !!!
If your spouse were alive and with you just for 5 minutes,, I could guarantee they would say “I love you forever,, BUT MOVE FORWARD WITH YOUR LIFE, DO NOT ALLOW YOUR LIFE TO STOP MOVING FORWARD JUST BECAUSE MINE HAS!! ”
I am sorry for your loss. With time and your effort you will work through the issues involved in the death of a spouse.
ps: don’t allow anyone to say “get over it” that statement is actually saying “avoid the issues involved” if you really think about it. This is a journey through all the emotions, and when you finish your journey you will be ready to continue forward with your life. It is your choice of course,, but, it IS YOUR LIFE so choose wisely.

It is not wrong to keep it on the checks -- you certainly should use up what you have before ordering new ones.
But keep in mind that buying new checks without your spouse doesn't mean you are forgetting your spouse. I haven't lost a spouse, but I was on my father's checks when he passed away. It is different, but I also know that for me, it was difficult to get over his passing -- and more so when I had his checks and other personal things in my purse to remind me of his passing every time I turn around.

If a spouse has passed away, there is nothing wrong with using checks that have their name on them. when the time is right, you will get other checks, if that is what you want. No one else's opinions should matter, there are very few right or wrong things in life.

The actual important issue is to keep the person on the account as deceased (the bank can tell you the right way to do this). I was told that way if a check is sent in her name, then I can still deposit the check legally.

I don't see how that is wrong. I have not lost a spouse, but I think that would be a very difficult thing to do. I feel very sorry for you.

when the checks run out, change the names - i remember the mom of a childhood friend that lost her husband at a young age (he was only 39) - she kept the listing in the phone the same (with his name) until she remarried many years later, obvious for safety reasons (which is very smart)

No, it's not wrong, but you have to understand that life goes on. I'm sorry for your loss, in the meantime, if you want to keep your spouse's name on your checks, then go for it. Best of luck to you..............

some women do it for safety like keeping the name on a mail box or in the phone book. I'd keep them on. Using intials in a phone book is almost a give away for a women alone.

Legally it just means that person is authorized to use that account so, its not breaking any laws. If it makes you feel better leaving there name there, I don't see how it could be wrong at all.

It's not illegal.
If it hurts too much seeing her name,
checks are cheap.
Maybe though, writing that last old check,
or the first new one will help you move on.
You will have to eventually.
Condolences...
