I can't seem to figure out what's going wrong. For some reason every time my 7-week-old poops it goes up his back instead of down into his diaper. I've tried loosening his diaper at the waist, and also tightening it. I've also tried settling the diaper higher up on his back and looser from his butt. Nothing seems to work, and I know I have the right size diapers for him.

Anyone have any tips?

I've tried different brands, and different types within brands (i.e. pampers swaddlers vs cruisers). He also has this problem in any position I have him in when he poops.

he's been through four diaper changes since I woke up this morning, and each time he's needed a change in clothes. Normally I'd be fine with this except for the small fact that he's still in the fuzzy ground between newborn and 0-3 mos. sized clothing and everyone, trying to be helpful, has decided to get him clothing in size ranges upward so he only has a limited wardrobe at this time.

on the size issue - I recently DID bump him up a size, and they're almost too big for him, so I know it's not that for sure.

I couldn't help but laugh when I read this. Is your son breastfed? This is common for a while if so. When my son was your baby's age we experienced that SAME issue. We tried different diapers, sizes, etc. etc. but we still experienced it. It got better after about 3 months... but we still had the occasional blow-out. Honestly, cloth diapers work MUCH better at preventing this. Not sure if you're willing to try them out but they really helped to eliminate the problem for us for a while. I used the Chinese pre-fold and the bummi covers... and used a diaper service. It's super easy... you don't have to wash them or anything... the service does it all for you.

If you're not interested in cloth... I noticed that the Seventh Generation Diapers worked much better then Huggies or Pampers or Luvs. Plus they're much better for babies skin.

Hope that helps. I feel for you! Been there.

My daughter has this issue. We tried all kinds of brands and sizes and we found that the pampers baby dry work really well. People who use pampers seem to use swaddlers or cruisers. The stretchier the tabs are the better the diaper works for my daughter. I keep her diaper snug but not too tight and a little higher in the back and the pampers baby dry or huggies worked the best for me and then the did not always work perfect. The cheaper brands did not work at all for my baby. They just dont fit the same and they dont look as comfortable. Luvs were the worst.

Good luck i know it is not fun to deal with. As your baby starts solid foods the poop thickens some too so in the future it will become a little better on it own.

Enjoy your little one

Does your child have enough room in the diaper? You may need to try a size larger to allow room for the poop. Just make sure they are not too big in the waist or legs though if you do this. I had a similiar problem and going up a size helped. The other thing is brand! I always had the best luck with Luvs and Huggies! Good Luck! I know you have the right size for your child, but I would try one size up anyway. Hopefully it will solve your problem!

I too have had that happen once with my 2 month old baby boy, it went up his back almost. I find that pampers (the jumbo box size 1 and 2 works). about the clothes issue, my son was born june 19th and he was born 37 weeks (preterm), he weighed 6 pounds and 3-6 months was too big so his daddy got him 0-3 months in onesies and some colthes but now hes out of 0-3. I would say just try and continue with what your trying, it happens sometimes and i found out that you cant get away from it sometimes. dont worry about the clothes being a lil big, the baby will grow into them faster than u expect (my baby weighs almost 12 pound at 2 months).

Weight wise it may look like the right size but if his poop is consistantly coming out of the top then the volume isn't being absorbed quick enough for the size he is in. The diapers are sized according to average amount of excretion , that means that half of the babies will do less and half will make more . You probably just have a bigger producer. Try a bigger size and I bet the problem will disappear.

I remember this. I had this problem with Pampers Swaddlers. I thought they had fixed this problem. Anyway, try a different brand of diaper (like Huggles). You may also try buying a larger size diaper.

Either go up one size, or try a different brand..I usually have to start my babies in Pampers, but alot of Moms say those did not work for them...Some like huggies, some stick with the cheapest...My babies blow those out every time! Also, see what position he is in when he does it and see if that's something you can remedy..

While I breastfed my kids, that was the case. Every single day. Sometimes right before church. I had her dressed so prettily, I was dressed prettily. A lady said, oh, you have some mustard on your skirt. It wasn't mustard.
I just got used to bathing her right after her BM.

I'm not sure you want it to go down into his diaper. Ours went up and down. Down her legs. Maybe you just need to recognize this may be a messy time of your kid's life. At least until he's a little older and you can feed him bananas.

They're still sweet, even if they are messy:)!

Mine are 17, and 21.

Ahhh, blowouts! You gotta love those!

I never really found a "fix" for the problem, but try this(I JUST thought of it, woulda been nice to think of it before now!)
Fold the back of the diaper down a bit, like you did the front for the umbilical stump. See if that helps.

April rose has a good point...cloth dipes! They aren't like the old days with pins and such. I used them with my last when she was little and she NEVER blew out of them! Look into them. I got all of mine off Ebay. They were genly used and I passed them on to a friend.

some babies just do that my 6 month old nephew does it to but it comes out each side of his diaper and he's been in every kind of diaper shape known. It just happens and he should get better in time.
