The song was originally performed by The Exciters, who also had a hit with a song called "Tell Him". However, their lasting claim to fame is producer/songwriter Mark "L.A. Reid" Rooney who is the son of lead singer Brenda Reid and group member Herb Rooney.
One thing I would like to add is that it was common for "British Invasion" bands like Manfred Man to have hits with songs originally recorded by American R&B artists.

do u realy like that song cz im 10 and my teech made ussing that song last yeer omg we had the worst time that songs horrible i hate it ugh thinking about ti makes me angry
