It happens everywhere! Abuse of greyhounds occurs in every state of every country where they are raced. The problem occurs where the owners view them not as a pet or companion but merely an "investment". This is why they might give them drugs, kill them or do other more horrible things to them if they don't perform as had been hoped.

The real tragedy is that as a pet dog a greyhound is one of the best as they have a great temperament and do not bark.

In every state that allows gambling on greyhound races, the dogs are routinely euthanized once it is determined they can't win money for their owners. The numbers are in the thousands.
Most racing greyhounds, though they are exploited for profit, are not abused (in the sense of being made to suffer) but are well handled and cared for until it is time for them to be put to sleep or adopted out. However, are some unscrupulous owners that abuse or neglect their dogs. Another form of abuse sometimes associated with dog racing is the use of a "live lure," i.e. a live rabbit, in training the dogs to race. This is obviously abusive to the rabbit, and tends to make the dog unfit for living with smaller pets.
In response to the massive killing of racing dogs that Greyhound Rescue organizations have grown up to find homes for dogs that are no longer wanted for racing. This saves a lot of dogs, but they can't keep up with the number of dogs being disposed of.
Retired racing dogs are typically gentle and healthy dogs, and young, so they do make excellent pets.

There are animal abuse problems everywhere. I haven't heard of any greyhound things, I've never even heard of there being a greyhound race here, but I'm from Virginia so we have that Michael Vick thing.
