I don't have the answers any more than anyone else, I wish I did.
Educating people seems to be the way to go, although there will be some who will always think it is ok to drink and drive.

I didn't expect, when I asked this question to be insulted and called an idiot, when all I wanted to know was peoples thoughts or ideas on a serious problem.

You know, you can't leave everything up to the government. After all, how do you think the country got into the state it's in?
Drunk drivers are generally people who think 'it won't happen to me' or 'what's the big deal?' The only way to get through to them is to show them the consequences. My brother was one of those drunk drivers. He was 22. He wrapped his Jeep around a tree. He is now paralyzed from the chest down. Why did he drink and drive? My dad did it for 35 years, and nothing (physical) happened to him. My uncles did it for 40+ years, nothing (physical) happened to them. So what's the big deal? Now he knows, and goes to local schools and colleges and speaks about how things are for him now. If he prevents one drunk driver each time he speaks, he feels like he's saved one life.
And what has the government done? Put him in alcohol abuse classes, when he's brought in doctor's notes stating that he can no longer drink because it will literally kill him. Require him to pay fines to reinstate his license when his legs do not work. No, I don't think government is the place to look for all the answers.

I agree with Uncle Joe. People need to stop hiding from their own inconsistencies and start taking responsibility. The govt can only do so much. And only a ignorant fool would expect the govt to control every single action of its citizens. So what you're saying is that person is not responsible for drinking then getting behind the wheel, the govt is? You're an idiot.

To cleia g - noone was thankfully killed so why bring back capital punishment for that?
I am concerned though. I use National Express a lot (it's a lot cheaper than the train) and all the journeys I've been on have been safe. I won't let one bad apple spoil the rest of the bunch.
I'd have a zero alcohol limit for driving too.

there is only so much the government can do. at the end of the day everyone has a choice to drink and then risk driving.
personally i think it should be banned out right - drinking then driving. Even tho they say you can have x amount of units, it all depends on what youve eaten, your body type etc. im really small and dont eat loads so a small glass of wine and there is no way i would get behind the wheel!

How exactly would you propose to make sure no-one has anything to drink before they drive off somewhere?
There is only so much government can do, at some point people have to take responsibility for their own actions. If this driver was drunk he'll be looking at several years in prison...

the problem with the laws and punishment for DUI related "accidents", etc. is the exact same today as it was in the 80's when MADD was formed. legislators and politicians drink and drive just the many others. they do not want to make the penalties to severe for a crime that one day they may commit themselves, it's that simple

with this bloody human rights act, don't expect anything to be done. After all, you must take the rights of the criminal into consideration, and bugger the victims and their families! Perhaps if we brought Capital Punishment back, people may think twice about killing someone.
