Just imagine if all the houses on one side of the street were numbered in order. What would you put on the houses on the other side?

Not all houses are so numbered. In some streets houses are numbered consecutively and in some villages just house names are used.

In many cases, the first house on the left hand side is numbered one.

The most likely reason is to aid the Post Office in sorting out letters for a Postman's delivery round. If you know that all the odd numbers are on one side of the street it makes it easier.

Houses use to be numbered as the were built. It was difficult for the mailman to deliver the mail if he didn't know where to look. So there is system of odds on one side and evens on the other.
