I have to pick through a lumber pile and don't want to encounter any flesh eating spiders or the like. Is it safer in the winter? The location is S E Wisconsin and now doesn't seem like the best time. Thanks, Jim

never heard of flesh eating spiders. just flesh biters.
wear gloves and long shirts. you can do it any time of the year. later in the day and very early is better when they are more dormant.
you can also try to knock at the pile with a stick to move them away from where your hands will be.
