Karma is a concept developed in Hindu and Buddhist thought. The word karma literally means "exercise" or "activity"from the Sanskrit verb root kri "to do."

In Hinduism, karma originally meant that a person what supposed to be diligent about performing the appropriate actions related to his station in life. Karma yoga was a reference to performing appropriate ceremonial religious and cultural acts.

Later, it became equated with the idea of cause and effect. It is no mystery that for every action, there is a reaction. This became conflated with ideas about morality and reaping what you so and then this, in Hindu and Buddhist thought also went along with the idea of reincarnation. It is not so much that a person gets rewarded or punished for their actions--although this is the belief held by some (like a Tibetan Buddhist lama I studied with who was into fire and brimstone-speak. Maybe the view is different among Theravadin Buddhists . . . ). the idea is simply that ordinary life is an unending string or cause and effect and that the momentum built up by this transcends the physical form of an entity--the energy (the "effect") causes another form to manifest and the cause and effect cycle continues. Higher forms of spirituality in Hinduism and Buddhism seek to end the cycle of cause and effect that has resulted in physical embodiment. In Buddhism and Hinduism even heaven and hell realms are considered to be phenomenological realms (like the ordinary world is a phenomenological realm). If you die and "go to heaven"--this isn't considered salvation or redemption to the Hindu and Buddhist. Technically speaking, karma continues there. They are "saved" (enlightened") when they overcome their karmic momentum (which in a sense is their very bodies and minds) and transcend the world of cause and effect and phenomenology.

Absolutely !! What goes around comes around. When people who are evil or diabolical that tend to hurt others and have no disregard for fellow human beings and, their actions that are intended to hurt others, in doing so, this person is "sending signals" through their body energy that someday, will turn around and bite them in the butt. I have several ( if not many ) times, have experienced this happening to such people. In addition, Karma gives us sense of well-being, because, there is no retaliation, just the realization, that this person (s) will eventually become a victim of their own evil . Just an opinion.

Heard a story about a man that asked another for $20 although the second man did not have much to spare he gave to first man regardless. A week later the first man returned to repay what he was given. The second man told the first man to keep what was given to him. In return if someone else ask for help give what is needed with no repayment in return, continuing to pass the message. In the end the second man continued to have whatever he needed.

I know in life I have tried to follow the example as in the story and have discovered it to be true. I have had friends over the years that may been tight with money even to the point that at times they did not know how long groceries would last. In return I would have they over whenever possible for dinner to help ease the burden. At the time I felt like it was not much but maybe it helped a little.
One day while I was (big) pregant with my second child, we (husband, child and myself) went into a pond shop to get rid of some equipment we weren't using and walked back out with it. As we walked in I noticed a man dressed like a bum. As we walked out about to get in our car he walked up to me handed me "something" said "God bless" and walked away.
By the time I noticed what he handed me he was at least 100 ft away...............it was ..................4 -$20 ($80) folded in half then folded in half again.

Absolutely, and I'm not even Buddhist or Hindi.

The idea that anything you do can affect you, either in this life or in some future reincarnation, seems perfectly logical. Anybody should be accountable for what they have done, good or bad, and should naturally be rewarded or punished for those actions.

Good question, this really made me think about things I haven't before.

I'm with the general concensus here with all the same reasons everyone posted.

Example: If you hit someone (unless they are unbelievably cowardly) you are going to get hit back. Instant Karma...

My life Path number is 8 which stands for Karma

The Law of Karma is the spiritual form of the physical Law of Cause and Effect.

Every action creates and equal and opposite reaction.

The Law of Karma helps us understand the effect of our actions.

This process helps the Soul to mature, awaken and remember.

The laws purpose is to teach love and to uplift, not to punish.

Karma applies itself in the most clever of ways.

If we deprived another being of freedom in a previous life, we would probably have our freedom curtailed in this life.

This experience would give us time to reconsider our views and learn the Law of Love.

Once we accept the Law of Karma in our lives, we are liberated from being the victim.

We begin to see underlying spiritual causes and act accordingly.

Problems become opportunities for spiritual growth.

Karma differs from fate or destiny because it encourages us to take an active role in life.

The Soul is always moving forward, it is never punished.

It must obey the Law of Karma and will eventually learn from its experience.

Karma follows us throughout our different lifetimes.

The Law of Karma is perfect justice.

This is reassuring in a world that can appear to be unjust.

One way to clear Karma is to show compassion and kindness to all, regardless of their position on the spiritual ladder.

We are all on a spiritual journey together.

Our suffering is not always related to our past actions to another.

There are many subtle processes at work.

If you experienced fear and persecution in a past life, you may still carry these feelings in your psychic memory.

You may experience unwarranted fear and anxiety in your current life.

These fears may persist until you remember the eternal
nature of the Soul.

The Law of Karma teaches us to be responsible.

Our current lives seem illogical if we view only one life at a time.

In a single life we suffer or are blessed for no apparent reason.

God seems to be arbitrary and random.

The principle of spiritual responsibility makes more sense as we accept the principles of karma and reincarnation.

Reincarnation teaches that we are born again and again until we learn the spiritual lessons of life.

The Law of Karma ensures that we link our behaviour with its inevitable results.

We reap in one life what we have sown in another.

If we impede the development of another being, we will incur a karmic dept.

By our actions, it's clear we haven't yet learned the Law of Love.

The debt will have to be paid, and a lesson will have to be learned.

The suffering, which may follow, is not the act of a vengeful God.

We are just reaping what we have sown.

The Soul develops its highest spiritual potential through experiences.

Love & Blessings
Milly

Absolutely. The universe has a way of balancing everything out, otherwise our world would have probably been destroyed by humans a long time ago.
