right now i think its 40 players on a team...september callups where the roster expands from 25 to 40

Typically it's a 25 man roster. However for the month of September the rosters expand to 40. Many of the minor league teams are finishing their seasons, so it's give the best minor league players an opportunity to play at the big league level, while at the same time giving the major league players a little rest.
When the playoffs start the rosters are set back to the 25 players.

Between Opening Day and August 31, 25 players (there is a minimum, I think it is 23 or 24; a rule that practically never raises interest).
From September 1 to the end of the season, up to 40 players.
Players on the 15-day disabled list do count toward the 40-man limit. Players on the 60-day DL do not.
Postseason rosters are 25, and cannot be changed except between series.

25 increased to 40 from September 1 through the playoffs. But only 25 are allowed to suit up per game.
