acoustic, i already have the guitar and i have a poster with all of the cords on it.. i already know how to play the violin and read that sheet music so im guessing that i would pick it up fast. but anyways, what would you suggest i do to start? should i get a book, i dont think lessons are necessary since i just want to learn for fun

I'm a private guitar teacher in Houston, and even though lessons wouldn't be your first choice, I would recommend them (not just because I give them). They allow you to get the instruction that will help you to progress and use it in your own way.
Other than that, I suggest looking into scale modes (Ionian, Mixolidian, etc.), and developing solo patterns such as the minor perntatonic.
As far as chords go, focus on rhythms. I'm sure you would pick up the chords themselves just fine, but a key element to playing well is transition between chords, and chord voicings (playing a chord more than one way).
There are many places on the internet you can go and find mini "lessons." For example, YouTube has quite a few videos with famous guitar players demonstrating different techniques and practice routines.

BUY A GUITAR. SHOP WITH SOMEBODY WHO IS AN EXPERIENCED GUITARIST (YOU'LL BE SORRY IF YOU BUY A PIECE OF CRAP). LEARN A FEW CHORDS IN ABOUT 10 MINUTES AND START BUILDING THOSE FINGER MUSCLES AND CALLUSES. PLAY THE INSTRUMENT A LOT - EVERYBODY WHO PLAYS WILL HELP YOU OUT AND OFFER NEAT CHORDS FOR YOU TO TRY. THERE ARE TONS OF GREAT "HOW TO" BOOKS AND TAPES - GET SOME TAPES. NICE TO HAVE YOU IN THE CLUB. WE ALL KNOW EACH OTHER AND IT'S A NICE CLUB.
