i have been an astros fan forever and really want to see them have a world series team. i know this year is very very unlikely but what about next? with biggio retiring and several contracts ending, what do you think the astros will do this winter? now that we got rid of tim purpura (thank god!). i really hope the astros acquire or call up some young energetic players like pence.

Other than Berkman, Pence, Oswalt, and Lee, there is no one particularly worth keeping for 2008. The new GM, if he knows what he is doing and McLane stays out of the way, will have to figure out how to build a roster that can at least play if not contend.

The Killer B era is over as of September 30, and a full-fledged rebuild is in order. This probably should have happened after 2005, but it is psychologically difficult to think a World Series team needs significant reworking -- most merely get tweaked, and sometimes that is the right approach but it was NOT for the Astros. So 2006 was doomed, and the big 2007 acquisition, Lee, didn't really solve any existing problem (nice to have him, but he didn't fill the biggest needs).

2008 priorities:
1. a catcher (buh-bye, Brad; being Baggie's goombah isn't enough this time)
2. at least two starting pitchers
3. at least two relievers
4. trade Lidge for whatever he'll bring -- he and Houston need to part ways
5. determine if Everett is coming back with his pre-injury range; if he loses a step, he loses his value, because he cannot hit
6. a third outfielder; Scott is okay if he can do the job; stop wasting time with Lane
7. tell Burke that 2B is his but if he blows it, he's back to Round Rock or Corpus before Memorial Day

And those are just the big issues.

I think the Astros will be active during the offseason. I keep hearing Lidge, Oswalt, and Ensberg mentioned in trades.
They had a good run, but missed going to the dance because they seemed to play the Braves in the first round and always lost to them. Now that the Braves are gone, so are the Astros.

If the new GM is a good baseball man, you should be competitive next year and in the race again in 2009.

Short-term memory loss? You had a World Series team in 2005! They lost, but they made it.

Pence is a stud! Pitching, like a lot of teams, is the main problem. Woody leading the league in HRs allowed? The choke job they had on the Cubs. They're the Southwest version of the Reds.

If they can get people out, they'll be part of the NL Central mix again fast. :)
