Here's my answer...consult Tom Petty's album The Last DJ. These three songs in particular:

Joe - http://www.anysonglyrics.com/lyrics/t/tompetty/joe.htm
Money Becomes King - http://www.lyricsbox.com/tom-petty-and-the-heartbreakers-lyrics-money-becomes-king-jmf7qz2.html
The Last DJ - http://www.lyricsdepot.com/tom-petty-the-heartbreakers/the-last-dj.html

They say it all.

Edit: Oh, and I forgot to say. In case you didn't already know, this album got terrible reviews. Looks like our Tom Petty touched some nerves...

Big record labels earning millions, soulless bands created for the purpose of earning money. I have nothing to back this up of course, it's fairly common knowledge, but "do you think" kind of indicates opinion. So yes, I would say so (or at least, if I was such a synic)

But there are still some really decent bands if you're prepared to wade through the torrents of processed crap records labels and advertisers bombard you with.

To add to Isis' answer, listen to Porcupine Tree's Piano Lessons and The Sound of Muzak.
Artist use to make music cause they loved it, now it's just to make money. CEO would care less about bands with talent if those bands don't dish out hits.
ie why Porcupine Tree never got radio play and MCR is all over it.
