I think it's interesting how people generally evolve in their taste for certain genres, as new bands are introduced to us... we open up to new genres over time ...

While I can say I still enjoy a pretty broad spectrum of rock genres now...here's how my progression came about...since the age of 11

Me:

Metal/glam metal -- "Alternative"-- industrial--electronica ---goth --Trip hop (18-22)...more punk :P (18-30) = As a result I am now heavily into synth punk, electro punk, and all other hybrids :D

... I still enjoy everything else I mentioned

what's your music evolution equation ?

I also listen to loads of indie, too

I include psychobilly and rockabilly under punk rock appreciation for some reason

Well I'M NOT ashamed that I started out as a metalhead ...pffft! :)
A lot people started out by the music collections of their older siblings ... or family members...but I pretty much had to navigate my way through to some good music ... not at all ashamed of my music evolution

Around eight I discovered music. I usually listened to those Top 40 pop hits that I really hate nowadays.

At nine or so, my tastes shifted to rock. I still listened to pop, but not as much. Mostly it was the emo and pop-punk stuff that I hate today too. I also got into alternative rock too.

That when on for two years or so. My tastes suddenly changed when I was twelve, and I began inhaling all these new genres, but also abandoned my previous rock and pop tastes. I began listening to some classic rock stuff, but to be more specific on the actual genre, hard rock.

Since then, I've been, like I said, taking in all these genres. During fall and winter, I listened to hard rock and some heavy metal. By spring, I was willing to listen to some British Invasion stuff and country rock (like the Eagles). And during the summer, I took on the blues, more bands from previous genres, folk and folk rock, alternative rock from the 80's and 90's including grunge, garage rock, progressive rock, funk, and punk rock. And maybe a couple other genres I'm forgetting.

Well when I was around 7 I listenend to alot of girly pop like hilary duff. Then I started listening to the radio more and more and listened to rap and r&b music, and anything that was top 40 music. When I was 13 I saw Panic! At The Disco's music video for I write sins not tradgedies, was awed at how hot the singer was and how great the song was, I went to a concert, the opening band(cobra Starship) was amazing, and from there I went on the internet and researched all these "emo" bands, which soon led to less emo and more alternative rock, even if it wasn't unknown.

Pop(7-9) - Top40(9-13) - Emo(13-14) - Alternative Rock/Indie/Punk Rock(15 onward).

Evolution is right!

Age 10 - Motown
Age 12 - Beatles
Age 15 - Stones, Doors, Hendrix, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, etc etc etc etc etc.
Age 19 - CS&N, Neil Young, Loggins & Messina, cosmic cowboy influence.
Age 24 - Pink Floyd again. Asleep at the Wheel. Local bands. Punk. Skipped out on disco entirely, oh yeah.
Age 27 - Fusion Jazz ... Metheny, Bob James, Earl Klugh,Coltrane, Santana, Weather Report, Grover Washington, Spyro Gyra, many more. Genesis.
Age 30 - Alternative. Thompson Twins, Blondie, Heart. Jazz. Yes.
Age 32 - James Taylor (?); still with the jazz.
Next decade - raising babies. Listening to jazz.
Age 40ish & on - Hooked on the kids' music. Vertical Horizon, Nickelback, NIN, Korn, Tool, Incubus, A Perfect Circle; still a jazz addict, which I will remain.

Most recent interest is progressive trance electronica, a la Royksopp.
Most recent CD bought - NIN Year Zero, Muse Black Holes & Revelations.

I know, TOO MUCH INFORMATION, but I had a lot of ground to cover!

I'm impressed by some of these lists! They remind me how much I left out - Ten years After, Chili Pepers, George Benson, Nobuo Uematsu.

When I was 8, I was asking the 14 year old boy who lived next door, "WHY DO YOU LISTEN TO THE RADIO ALL THE TIME?" I didn't see the attraction at all.

Naturally my parents had a huge influence on what I liked when I was younger and since they had clashing interests my musical tastes went in strange directions early on...
At age 6: new wave (Human League, Devo, etc.)
8: classic rock and pop (Pink Floyd, Janet Jackson)
10: glam rock - sadly this kept on for a few years.
13: hard rock/alternative (mostly local)
15: punk
16: indie noise/grrrl power folk
18: goth/industrial/trip-hop
20: punk/ska

Since then I pretty much listen to a little bit of everything I listed (with the exception of pop and glam rock). I'm also known to indulge in blues, big band, and jazz when the mood strikes : )

Rock and Motown (until I was about 7), then metal (7 until now). I've been listening to metal and rock mostly since I was 7 years old (just not hair metal- it never appealed to me). But over the years I've listened to (in order) early rap, dance, industrial, trance, reggae, country, latin music, punk (real punk), bluegrass, and blues. I will explore a music style and find bands that I like, once I'm into a band I pretty much stay a fan and I don't stop listening to any genre of music once I explore it. Kind of like the snowball effect- the list of bands I listen to just keeps growing and growing.

1. I have developed an intense dislike for certain questions, like the "Is it hard to play______?", and "I want to be famous, how do I start?". Normally I ignore them, but if I am feeling evil I will let them have it. I also am getting choosier about what I answer because I am more interested in good questions than in earning points. 2. No earthshattering revelations yet, but I am still playing the game. 3. I only edit if someone asks for more info on one of my questions...rarely on a response. 4. See #2. 5. I haven't asked many, but I don't think the ones I do ask have anything to do with time frame. My best resource is now retired, so when I get a good one I post it here and hope she dwings by. 6. Not really, any answer is better than no answer at all. All of my questions have gotten real answers, not goofy comments. 7. You come up with the most fascinating questions to post. Where do you get your ideas?
