Depends on what you want.
There are many avenues in the music business to take.
But when thinking of your question, I said to myself what business is easy to make it in? All take dedication, risk, know how, and marketing. But most of all...hard work.

EMOS
actually teens with bad taste and record companies who only sign artists who make annoying crappy repetitive songs. real talent is underground. people today if queen had just released bohemian rhapsody or if Led Zeppelin has just released Stairway to heaven it would not be played on the radio. People today want their standard 3 minute song. The reason these bands like P!ATD and MCR are so successful is that they cater to the teenage drama scene which is probably one of the worst things to do. Additionally after the debut of MTV music has become more of a fashion statement. To get people to listen you create a fad and then they can sell their fad to unsuspecting teens. Music now is becoming a business which is what music should never do. Music is not business it is ART.

It probably has alot to do with who you know and your connections. How else would people like 50 Cent come out of nowhere, act rich & famous, and have an entourage without any talent ??

But that's not to say that everyone is like that. Some just start small and send copies of their music to record companies and maybe even hire a small time agent to get them gigs so they may be seen & heard by people higher up.

stiff competition....and people don't seem to write great songs anymore (for the most part).....it seems a great love song has the most universal appeal...also if u arent good enough to get signed....u probably need to write some new music.....i think part of it is luck...part being in the right place at the right time...and u really just want to get out there and be heard...if u r that good...someone with clout will probably hear u...and steer u in the right direction.

So many talented people.
Hard to choose from them all.
The music industry has to have some of the toughest competiton.
But you can do whatever you want as long as you try and dont let anyone smash your dreams.
