Usually varnished cotton material over rubber. Covered overall with more varnished cotton or the spiral metal sheath called BX. It is very brittle and hard to work with by now. If it is not disturbed it is fine.

This is old rubber insulation.
It does tend to dry and get brittle.
Be every careful not to open any 'live`
boxes. The stuff can flake off and you
can have a 'short` or a shock in no time flat.

I would call an electrician and ask, I think some of it was an asbestos mesh. I don't remember seeing rubber under it but I do remember the white mesh sometimes with a red swirl around it in a thin line.

Cotton or linen. Usually impregnated with rubber or over rubber. If it is crumbling it is time to replace. Since the wire is ( hopefully ) in conduit it should not be too difficult.

non flammable! because flammable is dangerous! electrical wires can get quite hot highly basic material has ions, so it conducts electricity instead of insulating it highly acid will eat up the metal of the wire, so it would be bad
