^One person's misery is another person's entertainment. I don't watch the shows about homicides, I do like the shows on medicine and surgery not the vain plastic surgery shows, but where they actually help people, I know it can be gross for some, but I find it fascinating, especially watching open heart surgery, most surgeries really and I saw surgeons put a biological contact lens into someones eye so they could see again, remarkable! Definitely not for the squeamish, even I watched that one with on eye closed on pun intended!
There is a wonderful invention call a remote control you don't even have to get up, just click and change the channel.
As far as becoming desensitised, I can only speak for myself and what I've seen hasn't desensitised me, it saddens me to see how much hate there is in this world, even here on Yahoo.

I don't have a problem with the type shows you mention. My problem is with all the sex, profanity, and completely unrealistic way in which life is presented in movies, etc. I have worked in some of what one would think are the most vial areas of 5th largest metropolitan area in America (Dallas, Texas) and I can tell you that every other word is not the "F" word as depicted in the movies, nor is sex the primary topic of conversation. It's filled with real people doing the best they can to get by. Yet, we are fed an unending stream of a completely unrealistic look at parts of cities as I refer. No wonder businesses continue, for the most part, to ignore development in these areas.

Let's do reruns of The White Rapper Show, The Andy Griffith Show, Ozzie and Harriet, and what about Leave It To Beaver? There is not 1 program you could ahow that is not plastered on damn near every station on television. Let us not forget The White Shadow.

Television airs whatever brings in the biggest $$$$$$
If fewer people watched the stuff-they would air something else -bet your bottom $$$$$$$
I do believe that people become desensitized to violence and gore bu constant exposure to it .
That may be why children from abusive homes are more likely to be abusers or victims.

I think those shows are great for various reasons. More people need to know what actually goes on in the real world. Those shows can really open up your eyes and bring you back into reality when you get caught up in your own pathetic life.

I think for most people they need to see someone else's misery, so they can look at their own lives and feel good about it.
When you have the happy shows, people probably tend to look at their lives and wonder why that can't have it that way.
I guess what I'm trying to say is that we would rather watch other peoples heartache then to deal with our own.
We know that we can't measure up to the "Leave It To Beaver" show. Although that is one of my favorite shows of all time.

I know. I was watching a show the other day about suicides and how it is when they find them. It was depressing and creepy. I guess they are running out of reality shows to make these days.
