Can phone companies keep records of our text messages?

i just wanted to know if they are able to do that. Can they see what texts we are sending to other people?

i know i have seen it in court cases. but as a rule i don't think they are keeping records like that. i called nextel to try to get a copy of the texts on my account and they don't do that sort of thing.
