The direct approach usually works. Pick a likely-looking table. Approach it. Stand at an empty seat but don't set down your lunch or sit down yourself.
"Hi." Pause to smile. "Is it okay if I sit here?"
Worst thing that could happen is for the people at the table to say no, or lie about the seat being saved. You just go to another table and try again.

As a teacher and a former lonely sophmore...ask someone. Chances are they wish someone would ask them. Most people are not going to say no anyway and some people are even to shy to ask. Don't worry and enjoy your high school days....Now I teach first grade and I miss my carefree high school days. I know it is tough, but trust me, they are fun years.
Follow the other advice too, if someone is rude and does say no, then do try again....really. Or do like the guy above me suggested and ask before lunch. That way you won't worry as much all day. GOOD LUCK sweetie!

first try to look around and find some people that look nice and by that i don't mean popular girls. Go up to them and ask them nicely if you can sit with them. Usually if they're nice they'll say yes, but for some unknown reason just remember that the first day is always rough. Maybe the next day you'll be luckier.
Hope this helps!

i would try to talk to as many people you can in your hours before lunch. And ask them what lunch they are in and if you can sit with them then. Rather than walking around with a lunch tray in your hand not knowing where to sit. Good Luck!!

Start signing up for after school clubs, sports, etc. Key Club, French Club, Softball, Drill Team, FBLA, etc. Soon, THEY will be inviting YOU to sit with them. DO NOT ask if you can sit with them. It sounds desperate. You are better off asking if they want to join you.
