I got my first speeding ticket after years of clean driving, so I'm not too happy. I'm aiming to dispute it in court so I can plead it down to a no points offense (right now it's probably a 5 point offense). What arguments can I use to do this? Should I get a traffic lawyer or go at it alone? Thanks!

Sometimes you can go to traffic school and have the ticket dismissed.

I average 4 to 5 speeding tickets a year and have for the last 23 years. My worst in the last 24 months was 98/55. That is the only ticket on my record for the last 20 years. I use "good" attorneys to keep my record clean. Defensive driving school works wonders and you might try that. You can find it on line and see if it works in your state.
Most cops get overtime to show up in court so they do go to court as often as possible.
Your pleading to the judge is a joke and won't help you. Unless you can prove emergency circumstances but I still would not walk in to court without an attorney.
But find an attorney that makes the majority of his income from tickets and beating them. I have three attorneys I use for the three different jurisdictions I drive in and speed.
Black attorneys also seem to do very well in court. The courts I have been in tend to be a little more lenient. And I don't mean that to include any negative context.
A good attorney keeps your record clean and your insurance cheaper.

Just explain your case. How fast where you going, and where were you speeding may have something to do with the case.

One way to avoid a speeding ticket is to go to court. The police do not like to go to court because it is usually on their day off so they don't show up for court. If the police does not show up then your case cannot be heard because you have the right to face your accuser.

I read this in one of the Sunday newspaper magazine and this was one of their suggestions.

Hiring a lawyer can be more expensive than the ticket and no guarantee the lawyer will the case depending on the circumstances of the ticket. But five points is a whopping number of points.

A lot of what I have said may not be true for all states. Try legal aid for info.

Not to positive, but beating a speeding ticket can be difficult because this is a source of revenue for the city.
