You can lay it down, but do not immediately plug it in after you stand it upright. This can damage the compressor. According to the GE appliances web site, "If it has been necessary to transport the refrigerator on its side, it should be stood upright for an equal amount of time as it was on its side before plugging it in. If on its side for more than a day, leave standing for 24 hours before running. (If laying on its side just briefly to service, clean or adjust, just a few minutes of stand time will be enough.)"

A refrigerator circulates liquid refrigerant by gravity.
It will not work properly lying on it's side.
If it has been laid down to be shipped or something,
let it stand up for an hour or two for all the liquid to
drain to it's proper locations before starting the
compressor.

laying it on it,s side will not hurt it, BUT stand it up and let it set for 24 hrs before pluging it in,
when you lay one on it,s side the oil will mix with the coolant,
letting it stand for 24 hrs will allow the oil to drain back into the compressor,

It will work until it gets hot and burns up.
Even while laying one over to move it, you need to stand it up for several hours to ensure the oil is in its proper lace to run efficiently.

I wouldn't lay it on it's side, I wouldn't want to take the chance.

it will "mess it up" because the oils in the electric motor will not be in the correct position to lubricate.
