It definitely is not absurd! In Mexico chihuahuas were both revered, loved, sometimes buried with the owner and occasionally used as a food source. They were living with the native Americans before Columbus came to the New World. In North America they performed similar functions.

Dogs were bred from wolves and coyotes. They are native to the Americas and were originally used to pull travois and guard villages of the Plains Indians. They were also eaten in bad times.
