My mom passed away last year, and the cause was smoking for 40 years. A few days agao I received a card from Philip Morris saying, oh we lost touch with, please contact us to get more coupons. I am sick to my stomach to read this. Philip Morris can go jump off the bridge losers. Cigarettes are big business but I just don't get it. How do we keep our kids away from this life killing habit? Neither I or my wife smoke and never will.

Education is key, I think. The more they learn about the effects of smoking, the less appealing it will be to them.

You do not smoke, your wife does not smoke. A lot of misconceptions about smoking. There will always be people trying to cause confusion and getting better from it. Tobacco companies use all sorts of poison to make cigarettes and tobacco more addictive, then nicotine alone can do.. greed being the only reason for tobacco companies and the anti smoking lobby. Take your pick.
As I said you don´t smoke and that´s one of the best role models for your kids not to as well. It has no use worrying about your kids this way, when they want to make a choice to smoke you cannot stop them., they are sovereign people with a life of their own. Your mum led a full life, even though you think not. Put this matter behind you and do not worry about things you cannot change. Getting angry is worse, it causes Cancer to break out because negative emotions can mutate any healthy cell in your body.
I am 50 years old and I smoke and have done so since I was 14. My doctor tells me I am in a great shape. Yeah I know.... I ride bike used to play tennis, but I dance intensive every day some hours since my husband died. He was jealous possessive and used to lie a lot. And yes indeed the cause was cancer of the throat.

The question to ask is vehicle fumes and engine pollution.

My grandparents started smoking when they were about 14 / 16 and are now allmost 100 years old each, they smoke 20 - 40 per day each and allways have.

I dont think smoking is too much to worry about.

I know of 6 people in school whilst i was at school that got different types of cancer, ok most of them survived it but what was the cause?? -- well the Doc's had no idea because they could not point to smoking.

My uncle died aged 37, never smoked.

My parents smoke, dad is 62 Mom is 57 - they are both alive and well...

It's not smoking so much that kills people - we alll have a certain amount of time on this planet - just the amount of time we have is unknown!!

Get on the Internet and download pictures of a healthy lung versus a cancerous lung. Show them what cancer can do to a person. Personally, I told my son that when someone kisses a smoker, it is just like licking an ashtray. He loves girls, he doesn't smoke, LOL!

How hypocritical of Morris. They tout quitting smoking on their commercials and then they do this.

My dad also passed away from emphysema from smoking. He went from being a young body builder to weighing 90 pounds when he died. My son also witnessed that.

I am very sorry your mother died from smoking, really. My mom and dad used to smoke too, but they quit a long time before me and my sister were born.. so it's okay now. But I hate smoking/smokers! I just don't get it.. it smells disgusting and I'm pretty positive it tastes like crap.. so why? All you're doing is just killing yourself...If parents don't want their kids to smoke they should inform them about why smoking is so horrible and use examples because I think everyone knows someone or something about a person that died/ or something bad happened/ or is happening to them, and just keep telling them not to do it.

Be honest with them about how their Grandmother died.
That's the best way.
Let them know it was from smoking.

I'm going through those teenage years with my 2 children, and my Father and brother both have Emphysema really bad. We've almost lost my Father because of it.
I was honest with my kids the whole time, when they were asking what was wrong with him.
I'm hoping that will be a lesson learned for them, that they will see first hand how it takes your life.

My Father passed away 18 years ago from liver cancer, that had started in his lungs.
He smoked for 60 years.
They removed part of his lung, said they got it all, and a year later it was in his liver.
He passed away 6 months after that.
All from smoking.
And when my kids asked me about him, that's exactly what I told them.

I hope it was a lesson learned ;)

I believe strongly that the graphic affects from toxic choices are not being shown enough to people. Want to REALLY stop drunk driving? Show the images of the crash scenes with mutilated bodies. Want kids not to smoke? Show autopsy results!!!!
That's a TRUE RESULT that will be etched in the young minds and hearts of people....and they'll be INSPIRED to make healthy choices for themselves.
Telling kids not to do things doesn't work.

I'm sorry to hear about your mom. My mom died 5 years ago from lung cancer from smoking. Unfortunately, there is not a lot you can do to prevent your kids from smoking. Definitely talk to them and tell them the effects of it, that their grandmother is not alive today because of it, etc. That's about all you can do. Kids think they are invincible and that "it won't happen to me." A lot of them start because it's "forbidden" and for that reason, they think it's cool.

kids wontg listen to you if you just say not to smoke

and dont try to give them reasons that they wont care about now, such as the long term effects like lung cancer
pretty much just focus on the fact that youll regret it later and that now, itll make you smell bad, stain your teeth, and guys/ girls really dont want to kiss a smoker
i actually heard that kissing a smoker is like kissing an ash tray

and you dont need to sit them down or get all personal about it

just mention it to them when it comes up and say things of encouragement like "i trust that youll make good decisions, but i just want you to know..."

and especially get them to know this when theyre young, like 4 by just saying that theyre bad and gross and good people give themselfs a dirty image by doing that

im 14 and its all worked for me
