In all my machines you will find the 30W inexpensive Walmart house brand. Been using it for 18 years, change it annually (filters every 2 years), and have never had any problems.

The typical type oil is SAE 30 wieght - name brand - you can use 10w30/40 or 5w20/30 as well ( ive used those for years in my tractors with no problems) .
For a little added protection , i use some Lucas oil . Since most mowers are a 'splash' type ( meaning theres no oil pressure to move the oil around- its literally flung around inside the motor to lubricate the vital parts. The more you use the mower- change the oil more - at least 2-3 times a mowing season. When changing the oil its also a good time to check the mower over, give it a tune up, sharpen the blade, clean the deck, ect. A little preventive maintenence goes a long way.

Briggs and Stratton makes a lawn mower oil. Or straight 30 weight is fine.

Use standard 30 wt oil, oil like 10w-30 or 10w-40 will break down sooner,
the first # means the oil will act like 10 wt
then as it heats up it thickens, to 40 wt, not good on small engines,
