You have to know the language very well. Or at least, be able to read well so you can read after lectures as many times as you need to understand.

Before going abroad to study, you need to already be fluent in the language of the country where you are going to be studying in.

Every person has a different way of learning.
For me it worked if I went over my notes, synthesised them in concise notes, then memorized these.
Sometimes if you read your notes out loud to yourself or try to recite them out loud from memory, that helps.
I also find that sleeping after your learning session allows your subconscious to continue to process the newly learned material. Then you review the following day to better remember.
