I think success is to live honestly with graditude and being self-fulfilled in the end.
Having dreams, goals and accomplishing them or at least trying to, is important, even if it doesn't amount to much monetarily.
Money and position cannot measure a person's success or worth, because those things can be lost.

Success can only be measured in context, against a specific goal.
In our capitalistic culture we tend to measure success by money. If we say someone was a successful doctor we don't usually mean that he alleviated a lot of suffering or had a good bedside manner, we usually mean only that he made a lot of money at being a doctor.
But even there, people who have a lot of money don't always feel successful. Look at Bill Gates. If I was him I'd think 60 billion dollars was quite enough. I'd retire, sell 5% of my stock, do some traveling, maybe throw some big parties for my friends, maybe go back to Harvard and finish my degree, maybe collect antique airplanes or something. I mean the mind boggles at how many ways there would be to enjoy all that money in the brief span of one lifetime. But Bill Gates doesn't believe he has enough! He spends all his days plotting and scheming to get more money, even if it means using unsavory tactics. He probably stays up late at night conniving ways to make his business more monopolistic, to exploit the computer business and wring a few extra bucks from every Winsows User. Is that success?

Success in what area?
I'd say there are three ways to measure most types of success: Fame, fortune, and self-confidence.

When one finds and teaches another how to do his/her job efficiently, to replace him/her, then they can move to a higher position. One cannot be promoted until a replacement is found.
Often people are afraid to teach another their entire job for fear of being released. If that's the case, their job is not secure in any event.
My greatest success was seeing two assistants become Entrepreneurs and operate successful businesses of their own.
Even sales people who did the the same.
Be not afraid to leave your comfort zone.
Stay one level below your level of incompetence.
