Well I can only say what helps me. One of the things that helps me the most is to take a scarf and cover the eyes, ears, and throat in an s shape. It is almost impossible to cut all the light out without an eye cover and the covering of the ears and throat makes one feel more secure (no bugs in the ears) and prevents sore throats in the morning.

Another thing that helps is to eat a bit of something carby. I suggest warm oatmeal as oats are known to be calming. This has never failed me yet.

Finally if you can't still sleep or prefer this method try lifting hand weights till your arms are sore. This also has always put me to sleep as my body goes into regenerating mode as well as shifts my focus from my thoughts to the body.

Over active thinking can keep one up at night. I suggest meditation as a way to train the mind to quite at will.

I don't know about all that homeopathic stuff that the other person has posted but I say, if you've tried all the "usual" remedies, warm bath, soothing music, reading, warm drink....then my next suggestion would be to see a family doctor or psychiatrist for some medical intervention.

Try to establish a bedtime routine, avoid caffeine and sugar, listen to some soothing music, stretch before going to bed, and so on.

If that doesn't work then you might try visiting your doctor.

Quit sleeping, if not practical, sleep during the day.
