Americans first of all is a term which pertains to all people from the Americas. That is North, Central and South America, in addition to several island nations. Or are all people from Great Britain, English??
That being said, people from the US in general do not dislike the sport referred to by the British as football. Incidentally, the Australians and Canadians have their own forms of a sport called football as well as the US. You might as well ask why the Brits don't like US football.
It is a very simple concept if you do not grow up with a sport, you don't understand it, and often it does not have any appeal. I am from the southern part of the US. We don't have ice and snow in the south often so we do not play hockey. We didn't grow up playing and watching rugby and soccer so it makes sense we don't get as excited about the sport as do people from countries where this is the common childhood sport. Would the British people prefer to play cricket or baseball?
Cultures develop their taste based on their history and the geography of the country. There are large areas of the US without significant bodies of water, therefore, the average person from the US has no understanding or appreciation for rowing. I, however, went to a southern US college on a rowing crew scholarship. Our school also had intercollegiate soccer and rugby teams.
It is now common in the US for our kids to play soccer, and many move into soccer in high school and college. We have professional soccer teams all over the US, heck we even have Beckham.
Incidentally, the term soccer, is a term coined by Englishman Wreford-Brown, and was a term for footballers from Oxford. Wreford-Brown was the captain of the English National Team. The term is used in the US to differentiate between, Association Football (soccer), Rugby Football, and the other forms of football played around the world. So we did not start calling it soccer the English did.
It has nothing to do with whether or not we like losing. Of course the British don't mind losing that's why there are never any bar fights or problems betwwen fans following a "football" match.

I love the people that say we are closed minded to anything new!!! Ha, WE are new! The USA invented more new stuff to improve the people of the world's standard of living! Let's see, cars, TV's electricity, to name a few. Now on to your question: Why do you say we don't like football? We have been to the world cup 5 times in a row (more than Mexico, England, France, Holland, etc). More and more children are playing soccer every year in the USA, our youth levels are amongst the best in the world, and our league is rapidly improving in both level of play and attendance. The fact is the USA has more "high-level" pro sports leagues than any other country, so soccer has to compete with the likes of American football, basketball, hockey, baseball, golf, etc. and football is relatively new to the USA! To say we don't like football is a crass generalization that is off the mark. My question for you is why do you say Americans don't like football?

it's not that we don't like it, it's just that when soccer was emerging as a popular sport throughout the world, it never became quite as popular in the US as in the rest of the world. i really wish it would be more popular over here because then i'd have more people to talk about the game results and stuff like that.but instead most americans are interested in watching a boring sport in which fat men hit a baseball around or a so called sport which we call "football" over here. hopefully in the years to come, soccer will become more popular here.

You are wrong. There are many Americans who play football. Whenever I go to parks (I have been to hundreds of them), I have always seen people play football. Think about how big of a country America is. There are many local parks and many people at those parks play "soccer." The perception that Americans dislike football is wrong. They like watching other sports more than soccer, but there are MANY Americans who love football. Visit local parks across the country and you will see how many people actually do like football.

They are intimidated by it and scared to try something new. About 3 years ago i caught onto the English Premier League and have been hooked ever since. It takes alot to know the league/players and to understand all the matches being played throughout the season. On my sports forum, i get alot of American kids who come in and want to learn the league, but are embarassed by asking certain questions.
It's easy to follow and like a sport(like American football)when it's fed to you all your life and the league is fairly easy to follow. I thought i was a football junkie, but soon came to realize i hate the NFL and love European soccer. I'am also a big hockey fan as well, always will be.
NBA, NFL are off my radar forever. MLB is just a secondary sport to me now.

Americans appear to dislike things that they are not good at, cant controll of, or is not invented by themselves. The old world is proud to have and gard the genuine sport as it is and has been for centuries, and that is in the genes of europeans. Other parts of the world have valued football with much more respect, and it`s good for themselves.

In my opinion, it's not that Americans don't like footfall, It's just that they don't know the value, the exictment one gets when they play ball. I don't even know why they call it soccer- It's football for crying out loud. You play it with the foot. Football is a very precious game and people should show more appreciation.
