My wife and I are planning a trip to Louisville and Mammoth Cave area and are wondering if there is an entrance fee. We are also wondering how the hiking is; do we need to pack hiking boots or can we do it with just regular shoes?

may i suggest (if you like this sort of thing) staying at the wigwam village motel, a chain of motels opened in the 30s-50s. the famous one is in arizona but they also have one in cave city. it was a real retro cool place, sleeping in a teepee shaped motel for the night
also, yes there is definitely an entrance fee

There is no entrance fee to the park itself. There are numerous hikes in the park (and hiking is free) -- I personally haven't hiked any of them, but I have a book titled "Hiking in Kentucky" which is supposed to outline some of the states best hikes and a few from the Mammouth Cave area are in there. Here's a list of available trails: http://www.nps.gov/maca/planyourvisit/trails.htm The visitors center will have maps and better descriptions available for you -- I'm certain tennis shoes will be fine for the majority of the trails. There's abundant wildlife in the park so hiking should be very rewarding.

There are fees for the cave tours . . . but I recommend you do at least one. The site I linked to above is the official park site and you'll be able to find more information from there..

Well,
There are numerous activities in the area. And what a scenic area it is too. Have visited several times and always enjoy it. I do use hiking boots. Tennis shoes if you are going boating. Last trip was this past spring. And weather was cloudy, rainy. But still have a nice trip.

Here is one of many links to view.
