I've always wonder what was the point of ear wax and if we even need it.

Uh, I hope no one uses it for anything purposefully...
It may be annoying esp. if you have a problem with producing too much but its the body's natural way to assist in cleaning and lubrication (of the ear of course), and also provides some protection from bacteria, fungi, and insects.
If you were asleep and a baby roach crawled into your ear you would be very thankful that you had some wax in there, or he would be fumbling around in your head and you would be itching like mad.
I guess ear wax helps you NOT stab your ear with an awl to kill the tiny bug that easily slid down your wax-free canal just to dance in your middle ear until you go crazy.

its used to protect the delicate ear canal from external pollutants,much like nose hair for example.its medical name is cerumen(just thought I'd put that one in!) most cats like the taste of it too! read that in bizarre magazine once,tried it out ,one cat loves it the other hates it! gross i know!!!
