Well, at least he didn't use the II

"William Seward Burroughs II

named after grandad:

"His grandfather, William Seward Burroughs I, founded the Burroughs Adding Machine company, which evolved into the Burroughs Corporation."

Maybe for the same reason as the father of Gonzo journalism, the Duke:

Hunter S. Thompson

His middle name was Stockton.

Maybe they BOTH did it for the "iambic pentameterness" of the rhythm - 5 beats to the line, so to speak.

You've got to admit

William S. Burroughs and Hunter S. Thompsom both flow more smoothly to the ear than just

William Burroughs or Hunter Thompson

To avoid confusion with the well-known hockey player, William X. Burroughs.

It may have been a personal affectation with no real "reason"behind it.
