At a time when much of the world disagrees with the US liberating Iraq and American support of a democratic and free Israel, was this just a coincidence?

Basketball was invented by James Naismith, born and raised in Canada. He moved to the US to teach physical education at a YMCA, and he invented basketball there.

Naismith being Canadian is well-known outside the US and may have saved basketball's Olympic status.

Each host country is allowed to have one new sport. Whether the sport stays in depends on a vote of all countries that are members of the IOC.
Many sports have come and gone, and they vote on retaining sports each Olympiad.

There are not enough countries in the world playing baseball to support it at the Olympics. It has nothing to do with what the world thinks of the US or our policies.

Baseball and softball are gone after next year.

It's not anti-americanism, it's just that baseball is not played professionally on a wide scale outside the Americas. Basketball has remained and this a major American sport.

Well, basketball is still in and that is an American made sport too, so I doubt it.

I heard it was because there isn't a wide field of competitors. Not too many countries can field a team. Look at the WBC, there were only 16 teams I think. And a few of them were pathetic, not enough talent. Really only US, Japan and the Latin America countries have teams.

In my country baseball is not a big sport at all.
They must be played in so many country to be an Olympic sport. America is just one country not the world.

I bet you love a conspiracy.
Baseball is not a truly global game. Sure it is played in many countries, but you could ask why rubgy, cricket, lawn bowls and netball are not played at the Olympic level.

Baseball has not been removed from the Olympics.
