the statement is true; slavery started because the south needed cheap labor and slaves were a very reliable source. they were actually content with their life; if the slaveowners set them free then the slaves would have to idea what to do with themselves.
the north disagreed with the south about slavery issues, and the south defended their arguement by the peculiar institution. they argued that science and the Bible allowed them to keep slaves. but the peculiar instituion made every white man feel superior to blacks.
