The egg is fertilized within 24 hours of ovulation, after that the egg can not be fertilized anymore. It then takes about 6 days to travel down to the uterus and start the implantation process.

the first thing to note is you do not get pregnant the first time it is done...you have to be really lucky for it to happen the first time itself...

it can sometimes never happen till the 5 or 6th time too...this is because the sperm needs to travel up all the way through the fallopian tubes and reach the ovaries...this is subject to the fact that the sperm lives only around 18 to 24 hours is a basic medium...while the passage is lined with urinary juices which make it acidic and can kill the sperm...this can be mitigated by washing well before sex and avoiding the usage of the toilet immediately after sex ...very often women go for a pee after the guy has ejaculated...this leads to the washing down and also changing of the sperm's environment into an acidic environment.

so good luck next time...and the whole process of conception gets confirmed about 14 to 21 days (woman to woman)...this is why women check the timing of their periods to identify disruptions and potential pregnancy situations...
