your radiators will be hot of course and if you listen you can hear the pump either in situ or listen to the whoosing sound through the pipes. that is what i did, and had to have a new pump. but it was insured. always a good idea.

Central Heating Pump Not Working

2016-10-02 02:36:53 · answer #3 · answered by ? 4 · 0 0

If it has power it will vibrate there should be a large screw on the front this can be removed (don't worry only a little water will drip out) and you can see the motor spinning inside gently place a screwdriver into the hole and it will be hit by the rotating spindle if it is spinning when on then the only other test is to feel the pipes either side of the pump you should feel the heat on both sides travelling along the pipe . Oh and put the lager screw back in water May drip for a while from beneath the cover plate

I you have a regular system, the water and heating will warm up, if the hot water is a gravity system the heating may only get warm upstairs if the pump is not working. I presume you turned the heating or the 'summer', would you park your car for six weeks and then expect it to start? thought not! In summer turn the room thermostat down, timer the heating on for 1 hour per day, stops things from seizing up. Just saved a few people a lot of money with this, never say plumbers do nothing for free!

RE:
how can i tell if a central heating pump is working ?

Easy way is to put your hand on the pump housing, then switch the pump on. You should feel a gentle vibration from the pump motor, which should stop when you switch the pump off. If you can feel no change, and you are sure that power is getting to the pump, then it's likely to be kaput.

Get a long screwdriver, Put the metal end on the pump housing. Put the wood/plastic end against your ear. You will hear if it is turning or not.

Kosher! Give it a try,
