As a British citizen you are from a country which participates in the Visa Waiver Program as does the US. You can enter the US for up to 90 days. However, if you have ever been convicted of a crime, even a traffic conviction< you may not qualify for the waiver program.

If you go to the following website:

http://www.usembassy.org.uk/cons_new/visa/index.html

There is a Visa waiver wizard, click on it to see if you qualify, if not go to the US Embassy for Visa counselling.
